Old Weighing Scale, Dead Indicator? How to Replace a Weighing Indicator Without Buying a New Scale (Malaysia Guide)
The platform is solid, the load cells were fine last year, but the display keeps freezing, showing E-codes, or refusing to zero. Before you write off a scale that still has years of life in it, ask one question: is the problem the indicator? In many cases you can replace the weighing indicator on its own and keep the platform and load cells — but only if you choose one that actually matches your setup. Here is how to check.
Can You Replace Just the Weighing Indicator?
Usually yes, provided the platform structure and load cells are still in good condition. The indicator powers the load cells, converts their tiny signal into a weight reading, and adds functions such as tare, counting or batching. Because it is a separate electronic unit, it can be swapped without replacing the whole scale. V&C Infinity does this on site — our on-site indicator change for an existing floor scale job covered changing the indicator and calibrating the existing scale so the new unit works properly with it.
5 Things to Check Before Buying a Replacement Indicator
- Load cell type and count. First confirm whether your load cells are analog (mV/V output) or digital, because they need different indicators. Then check capacity: the JADEVER JIK-8 drives up to 8 x 350 ohm load cells, while the PRECIA MOLEN i35 can drive up to 18 PRECIA MOLEN analog or digital load cells for long weighbridges. The CAS CI-120A supports up to 8 load cells and works with both analog and digital load cells.
- Calibration method. Some indicators let you calibrate digitally by keying in the load cell’s mV/V value. The EXCELL 150S supports this, so no test weight is needed for the initial setup. It is a convenient starting point, but a scale used for trade still needs proper calibration and verification afterwards.
- Outputs and connections. List what the indicator must talk to: a printer, PC, PLC or HMI. The EXCELL 150S has built-in Modbus RTU over RS232C or RS-485, and the PRECIA MOLEN i35 adds Ethernet TCP/IP and fieldbus options such as Profinet, Profibus DP and Ethernet/IP.
- Functions. A plain display is not the same as a controller. The RINSTRUM 5100 is a dedicated batching indicator with up to 99 recipes and 20 materials, while the JIK-8 adds counting, percent weighing, check weighing and accumulation.
- Housing and environment. Match the enclosure to where it will live. The JIK-8 comes in ABS or stainless steel, the EXCELL 150S has an IP65 splash-proof front panel, and the i35 has an IP66 stainless steel housing (IP69K optional). Remember an IP rating belongs to the indicator only — the platform, junction box and load cells have their own.

When a New Indicator Will Not Fix the Problem
An indicator only reports what the load cells tell it. If the readings drift, jump around or will not return to zero, the real fault can sit in a damaged load cell, a corroded junction box, a cracked cable or a worn platform. Replacing the indicator in that situation just gives you a new display showing the same bad signal. If your symptoms point that way, have the scale inspected first — our weighing scale repair service can tell you whether it is the indicator, the load cells or the structure.
What About Trade Use in Malaysia?
If the scale is used to sell goods by weight, it must be verified under the Weights and Measures Act 1972, so check that the indicator you choose is type-approved before you buy. After swapping an indicator on a scale used for trade, have it calibrated and confirm your verification and stamping requirements. V&C Infinity Enterprise Sdn Bhd is a licensed weighing scale repairer in Malaysia, qualified to apply for trade metrology licensing, and can arrange ISO 17025-certified calibration for customers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I need to replace the load cells when I replace the indicator?
A: Not necessarily. If the load cells are undamaged and compatible with the new indicator in type, count and capacity, they can stay. Damaged or fatigued load cells should be replaced regardless of the indicator.
Q: Can a new indicator fix an unstable or drifting reading?
A: Only if the indicator itself is faulty. Drift and instability are more often caused by load cells, junction boxes, cables or an uneven, vibrating platform, so diagnose before you buy.
Q: What is the difference between analog and digital load cells?
A: Analog load cells send a small millivolt signal (mV/V) to the indicator, while digital load cells process the signal internally and communicate digitally. An indicator built for one type will not automatically work with the other, so confirm this first.
Q: Does V&C Infinity change indicators on site?
A: Yes. We have changed the indicator on an existing floor scale on site and calibrated it so the new unit works with the existing platform. Contact us with your scale details and we will advise what is needed.
Q: Is it cheaper to replace the indicator or the whole scale?
A: If the platform and load cells are healthy, replacing only the indicator is usually the lower-cost route. If the load cells or structure are also failing, a full replacement can make more sense.
Not Sure Which Indicator Fits Your Scale?
Send us your scale capacity, load cell model and what you need the indicator to do. V&C Infinity Enterprise Sdn Bhd will help you decide whether a replacement indicator, a repair or a new scale is the sensible next step.
